Kernighan reads Brooks

“What some people mistake for the high cost of living is really the cost of high living.” (Doug Larson)
That's the quote of the day, totally unrelated to the topic of this post. (Or is it?)
In my not-so-humble opinion, this excellent interview of Brian Kernighan is a must-read for anyone in the computer trades. The inventor of the C programming language is indeed very modest and closer to reality than one would expect a computer scientist to be. When asked to recommend computer books, he goes, “The only computer science book I read more than once, that I actually pick up every few years and read parts of again, is The Mythical Man-Month by Fred Brooks, a great book.” I think it's more of a software engineering book than a computer science book (which is a distinction I like to maintain). It is also probably the only software engineering book that I ever read, thanks to Philip Tellis, who recommended it to me (repeatedly) a few years ago.
( What debugging techniques do you use?... )
